Interesting Facts On Chromatography Columns

By Kelly Belli

Chromatography columns are used as a tool for scientists to analyze split chemical compounds. There are two different kinds of techniques used when using these tools. The liquid style is based on movement of a liquid or a mobile phase through a bed made of solid material. In order to get the best results, it's important to find the most reputable research lab supply company for all your equipment.

When testing, it's vital that the correct chromatography products are used. There are many kinds of materials that can be utilized for making up a solid or a liquid base. The scientist however, needs to be aware that there are different phases that have affinity to the various compounds that will be separated.

Once the mixture is poured into the pipe, a smaller layer of sand or glass wool is inserted to protect the eluent. Organic material is then passed through the tube for separation. The eluent is monitored and separated into fractions which are then analyzed for compounds that have dissolved in the mixture.

The most common stationary phases that are used in the process are silica gel along with alumina. Cellulose powder such as diatomaceous earth, which is a powder made from the skeletons of single cell algae, is used for ion exchange, reversed phase, affinity and expanded chromatographic processes.

This process is used in forensic laboratories, hospitals and other laboratories. It is used to separate and analyze petroleum and oils. In hospitals, this process analysis blood samples for recreational drugs. It's also used to evaluate various chemicals that could show up in urine, blood or saliva.

Gravity is used to control the flow rate and the use of pumps and compressed gas such as nitrogen can push the solvent through the pipe at a faster rate. The pace of technology has raised its head in this process as well with the invention of automated cylinders that can do the same process, but at higher speeds. These are called flash systems.

Scientists use these methods to explore gasses, compounds and chemicals once they have been separated into molecules. This research will be used in the testing of blood and the manufacture of medicine. Chromatography columns are a necessary tool for scientists to measure and to analyze particles and molecules that will eventually serve a valuable service to mankind.
